a little storefront near my house, BEDSTUY FISH & CHIP JUMP OFF. i was so excited the first weekend after my boyfriend and i moved in a few years ago, the 4th of July, 2004 - fish & chips one block away! i love anything fried, and fish & chips fits squarely in that category. sadly, days turned into weeks into months into years, and it never opened. our landlord tells us that it opened for only one day, then closed again. come back, little fish & chip place!
incidentally, if anyone knows why this place is called a "jump off", or what it might mean, please let me know.

maybe "jump off" refers to rapping battles

good suggestion. that article is even from the very same weekend that i first saw the jump off - july 6, 2004! i'm not sure i have any interest in battling, though, rapping or crafting...
thanks for illuminating me, though. i knew i should've googled it...
a "jump off" is an annual tradition celebrated by the maasai people of kenya/tanzania. when the brits were in their whole global domination world conquest mode, they adopted the local custom, gave it their own "hot potato" spin, and it looks like it found its way from zanzibar to brooklyn.
the fact that your fish and chips place only opens once a year stands to reason. just mark your calandar for june 21st for the next "jump off" (actually, it's probably already marked...midsummer's day, no coincidence).
