so here it is so far. i decided not to go with the diagonal stripes because the colors were getting a little muddled. i'm also going to add a few appliqued shapes, like hearts, rubber duckies, plus signs, that will be in a contrasting color and fit completely within one 4"x4" square. on the back, i'll but some multi-colored prints that didn't fit on the front and some more subtle neutral tones.

I believe I recognize that square in the lower right hand corner of the bottom photo. Throw a significant number of white doggie hairs on it and I could be sure...
if you will permit me to get a little corny here: that's what i love about patchwork quilts - the scraps are from lots of other quilts, and scraps left over from this one will go into quilts in the future. it's nice to recognize a piece of fabric that's in your own quilt. all of my nieces (and nephews, siblings, etc) will have some pieces in common in their quilts. maybe it will be fun for them when they're older. it's also possible that they'll think i'm a dork.
Yes, I recognized your quilt patch too (that's my thumb holding it up on the left side from when I was in NYC this past weekend)! Awww.... and we don't think you're a dork, little eeki quiltrix queen!
I don't think you're a dork, I think that's nice, too. But...I'm kind of a dork.
None of my children are dorks! And I agree, Emily, about the connecting pieces of quilts. That will be fun when all of these rascals are older - save some scraps for me when you make my nursing-home quilt!
